Yurdum Social Eco Village
Supportive Community and Inclusivity
The YURDUM SOCIAL ECO VILLAGE Azerbaijan's first pilot project for creating a supportive community for adults with disabilities, has been closely linked to my journey since its April 2024 launch.
Understanding this initiative requires knowledge of Azerbaijan's rich historical context. Situated at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Azerbaijan features remarkable diversity and ecological wealth. Its two-million-year history includes key events from ancient settlements to Caucasian Albania.
Today, challenges like population displacement and stigma against individuals with disabilities lead to marginalization, but the government's focus on community-based solutions signals a shift toward inclusivity. YURDUM was envisioned to blend therapeutic living with social and agricultural activities, fostering belonging among residents and staff. Influenced by the Camphill movement, it honors local traditions while integrating innovative practices. Supported by the NGO Humayun and the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, YURDUM operates as a day center in Baku's historic district.
Our dedicated team strives to create an inclusive environment. We aim to establish a network of YURDUM communities across Azerbaijan, showing that supportive living and sustainable practices can transform lives. YURDUM is a vision for a more inclusive future.
